Fanny Cornforth (actually Sarah Cox ; * 1835 in Steyning , Sussex , † 1906 in London ) was the model and muse of the Pre-Raphaelites .

Life

In 1858 the London maid Fanny Cornforth met the painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti . He took her as a model and lover. She later dated William Holman Hunt and George Price Boyce .

In 1860 Rossetti left her and married Elizabeth Eleanor Siddal . After his wife died of a laudanum overdose , Rossetti moved to Chelsea in October 1862 and renewed his relationship with Fanny. She modeled him, ran his household and became his lover. He painted them far more sensually than Lizzie Siddal, and the pictures sold well. In 1870, Rossetti separated again from Fanny and had an affair with Jane Burden . When she discovered the extent of Rossetti's chloral addiction in 1876 , she broke off relations with him. He contacted Fanny again, who nursed him back to health.

In December 1881, the constantly ailing artist suffered a stroke that left arm and leg paralyzes, and Rossetti ended his longstanding relationship with Fanny Cornforth. Little is known about her later life.
