Philip Quast

Philip Mark Quast (born July 30, 1957 in Tamworth ) is an Australian musical actor and actor . He was the only one to win three Laurence Olivier Awards for Best Actor in a Musical . Probably his best-known role was that of Javert in the musical Les Misérables , which he played in the first Australian production of the musical. He appeared again in this role at "Les Misérables: The Dream Cast in Concert" on the occasion of the musical's 10th birthday at the Royal Albert Hall in London .

Life

Early life

Quast was born on July 30, 1957 in Tamworth, one of three sons. He grew up on a farm that mainly worked with turkeys . He was taught in a school with only one teacher.

Career

Beginnings and breakthrough with Les Misérables

After graduating from the National Institute of Dramatic Art in 1979 , he began his career at the State Theater Company of South Australia. In the early 80s he appeared in pieces such as The Mystery Plays of Wakefield, Three Sisters , On The Wallaby, Pericles , A Month in the Country , As You Like It , Pygmalion , A Hard God and Candide. It was around this time that he began appearing on the Australian children's program Play School and in several soap operas .

He starred as Javert in the original Australian production of Les Misérables. He received the MO Award in the Best Male Musical Theater Performer category and the Sydney Theater Critics Award in the Best Actor of the Year category . In 1989 he moved to London to perform in Les Misérables: The Dream Cast in Concert. He also later appeared in productions of Les Misérables as Javert.

Success with more pieces

His success continued with the role of Georges Seurat in the musical Sunday in the Park with George : He received his first Laurence Olivier Award. In 1993 he returned to Australia to perform in Coriolanus and Into the Woods . He received the Sydney Theater Critics Award for Best Actor of the Year for his appearance in Into the Woods. He then returned to London to perform with the Royal Shakespeare Company until 1996 . Quast appeared in Hey, Mr. Producer, in 1998, a concert in honor of Sir Cameron Mackintosh. That same year he received his second Olivier Award for the role of Grahame Chandler in The Fix. He received his third Olivier Award for the role of Emille de Becque in South Pacific . He was nominated for an Olivier Prize in 2006 for the role of Juan Perón .

In July 2010 he played Mr Banks in the Australian premiere of Mary Poppins. For this he won the 2010 Victorian Green Room Award (Melbourne's highest theater award) for best supporting actor in a musical. In 2011 he also won the Helpmann Prize for "Best Actor in a Musical" for this role.

He is mainly a baritone, but has played a few roles written for tenors. He is also known for his serious roles, although he also played comedic roles such as the pompous Miles Gloriosus in a 2004 limited revival of A Funny Thing Happened.

Personal life

He has three children with his wife Carol. They married in 1981.
