Muliufi Francis "Mufi" Hannemann (born July 16, 1954 in Honolulu , Hawaii ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ) and former mayor of the city of Honolulu and the county of the same name .

Life

Hannemann was born in 1954 as the sixth of seven children of Gustav and Faiaso Hannemann. He studied at Harvard University and Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand . After his return to Hawaii he worked as a teacher at the Iolani School (Honolulu). In 1986 he tried to be elected to the US House of Representatives , but was defeated by his Republican rival Pat Saiki . On his next attempt, he was already defeated in the primary by his competitor Patsy Mink .

In 1994 Hannemann was elected to the Honolulu City Council and in 1998 again. 1998 to 1999 was chairman of the city council. In 2000 he left the city council to run for mayor, but was defeated by incumbent Jeremy Harris . It was not until 2004 that Hannemann succeeded in being elected mayor of Honolulu and the county of the same name.

On July 20, 2010, Hannemann resigned from this office to run for the successor to the incumbent governor Linda Lingle . However, he failed in the Democratic Party primaries in September 2010 because of his challenger Neil Abercrombie , who subsequently won the gubernatorial election against the Republican James "Duke" Aiona . In 2012 he was defeated in the primary election for the Democratic candidate for the seat for the 2nd constituency in the US House of Representatives to his competitor Tulsi Gabbard .

In the gubernatorial election in Hawaii on November 4, 2014, Hannemann ran as a non-party candidate. However, with a share of almost twelve percent of the vote, he came third, behind the victorious Democrat David Ige (49 percent) and the Republican James Aiona (37 percent).

Hannemann is married.
