Patricia Fukuda "Pat" Saiki (born May 28, 1930 in Hilo , Hawaii ) is a former American politician . Between 1987 and 1991 she represented the first constituency of the state of Hawaii in the US House of Representatives .

Early years and political advancement

Pat Saiki attended Hilo High School until 1948 and then studied at the University of Hawaii until 1952 . After that she worked as a teacher and businesswoman. She became a member of the Republican Party . From 1968 to 1974 she was a member of the House of Representatives from Hawaii and from 1974 to 1982 she was a member of the State Senate . After the resignation of Congressman Cecil Heftel , she ran in a 1986 by-election unsuccessfully for his seat in Congress , which went to Neil Abercrombie .

Congressman

Saiki ran successfully against Abercrombie in the first constituency of Hawaii in this year's regular congressional elections. After being re-elected in 1988, she was able to exercise this mandate between January 3, 1987 and January 3, 1991. In 1990 she no longer ran for the US House of Representatives. There their seat fell back to Neil Abercrombie of the Democratic Party . Instead, she ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the US Senate . In these elections she lost 44.6% of the vote to incumbent Daniel Akaka .

Until 2010, Pat Saiki remained the only Republican House MP from Hawaii; From May 2010 to January 2011, Charles Djou, the only other Republican from Hawaii to date, sat in the House of Representatives. Otherwise, since 1959, when Hawaii became a state of the United States , all congressmen, including the senators (except for Hiram Fong ), have been members of the Democratic Party. Between 1991 and 1993, Saiki was the head of the Small Business Administration under President George Bush . In 1994, she ran unsuccessfully as her party's candidate for governor of Hawaii.
