Mark Takai
Mark Takai (born July 1, 1967 in Honolulu , Hawaii , † July 20, 2016 there ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party . From January 2015 until his death he represented the state of Hawaii in the US House of Representatives .
Career
In 1985, Mark Takai graduated from Pearl City High School . He then studied until 1993 at the University of Hawaiʻi in Mānoa, a district of Honolulu. He worked as a private businessman and headed Pacific First Health Solutions until his death . Since 1999 he has been a member of the National Guard of Hawaii. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party , for which he was a member of the House of Representatives from Hawaii between 1994 and 2014 . In 2005 and 2006 he was Vice Speaker of this Chamber of Parliament.
In the congressional elections of 2014, he defeated former Republican Congressman Charles Djou and was for the first congressional district of Hawaii in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC selected. On January 3, 2015, he succeeded the mandate holder Colleen Hanabusa , who did not run again in the 2014 election, to instead acquire a mandate in the US Senate .
After Takai had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in October 2015 and had successfully completed treatment, Takai announced in February 2016 that he would stand for re-election in November of that year. On May 20, 2016, however, he announced that he wanted to concentrate on combating the disease that had broken out again and that he would therefore not stand for re-election; he will leave the House of Representatives on January 3, 2017. His predecessor Hanabusa announced at the beginning of June 2016 that she was applying for the mandate and that Takai would support her.
In July 2016, Takai died of cancer at the age of 49.
