Lincoln Loy McCandless

Lincoln Loy McCandless (born September 18, 1859 in Indiana , Indiana County , Pennsylvania , † October 5, 1940 in Honolulu , Hawaii ) was an American politician . Between 1933 and 1935 he represented the Hawaii Territory in the US House of Representatives as a delegate .

Early years

In 1867, Lincoln McCandless moved to Volcano , West Virginia with his parents . There he attended public schools. In West Virginia he got into the oil business and mining. After moving to Leadville , Colorado , he also worked there in these industries. In 1882 he moved to Honolulu in what was then the Kingdom of Hawaii . Among other things, he dug wells there. From 1887 he was also a cattle breeder.

Political career

After Hawaii became a republic, McCandless became a member of the legislature in 1898. After the area passed to the United States and the Territory of Hawaii was established, he became a member of the Territorial Senate between 1902 and 1906. He was also one of the earliest Democratic Party leaders in Hawaii. In the following years he applied for a seat in the US House of Representatives several times without success. It was not until the congressional elections of 1932 that he was elected as a delegate of the Hawaii Territory in Congress . There he completed a legislative period between March 4, 1933 and January 3, 1935.

After he was not confirmed in office in 1934, he returned to Honolulu, where he returned to his private business. This included the management of the plantations he had acquired in the meantime, as well as building roads and housing, as well as building sewers. Lincoln McCandless died in October 1940 and was buried in Nuuanu .
