The wind farm Burbo Bank is an offshore wind farm in Liverpool Bay (Bay of Liverpool , Irish Sea ). The site is at the mouth of the Mersey , about 7 kilometers off the coast of Sefton and Wirral ( north-west England ). The park is operated by the Danish energy supplier Dong Energy .

history

Burbo Bank is part of "Round I" of the Crown Estate's offshore wind farm development program , which began in late 2000.

Construction began in April 2006. The first wind turbine was producing electricity for the first time in July 2007. The wind farm was officially inaugurated in October 2007.

Construction (phase 1)

In the first construction phase of the wind farm, 25 wind turbines of the type Siemens SWT-3.6-107 with a rotor diameter of 107 m and an installed electrical output of 3.6 megawatts each were built, i.e. a total of around 90 MW. The gondolas with the generators are at a height of 83.5 m above sea level. The 25 systems are spread over an area of around 10 km². At this point the bay has a water depth of 2 to 8 m at low tide. The electrical energy is conducted via a 33 kV medium-voltage submarine cable to a substation on land in Wallasey .

Burbo Bank is one of four offshore wind farms in Liverpool Bay: further to the west are North Hoyle with 60 MW and Rhyl Flats with 90 MW. The last, much larger offshore wind farm Gwynt y Môr with 160 turbines for 576 MW has been officially in operation since June 2015. The Seaforth Docks onshore wind farm is also located on the nearby coast, on the quay wall of Liverpool harbor .

By the end of 2017 [obsolete] , Dong Energy planned to integrate a battery storage power plant with a capacity of 2 MW in the 90 MW part of Burbo Bank. The memory should improve the stability of the mains frequency of 50 Hz.

extension

The Burbo Bank Extension includes 32  wind turbines of the type MHI Vestas V164 with a total nominal output of 256 MW. In December 2014, MHI Vestas received the final order to manufacture the turbines and maintain them for an initial period of five years.

Offshore construction work for the expansion of the wind farm began in June 2016. From September to December 2016, 32 wind turbines were A2SEA - up barge Sea Installer installed. It was the first commercial wind turbines for 8 MW to be installed in an offshore wind farm. The wind farm was officially opened in May 2017.

Participation structure in the Burbo Bank Extension (as of February 10, 2016) :

proportion of Shareholders
50% Dong Energy
25% Kirkbi
25% PKA (Danish Pension Fund )
