The Gwynt y Môr offshore wind farm ( Welsh 'wind in the sea') is an offshore wind farm in the Irish Sea ( Liverpool Bay ) off the Welsh coast. It is located near the North Hoyle and Rhyl Flats wind farms and was officially commissioned in June 2015.

General

The wind farm has 160 wind turbines of the type Siemens SWT 3.6-107 (3.6 MW rated power , rotor diameter 107 m). Together they have a nominal electrical output of 576 MW and generate around 1950 gigawatt hours of electricity per year  . This amount of electricity corresponds to the electricity needs of around 400,000 British households.

The systems are located in average water depths between 12 and 28 meters. They are each between 350 and 1000 meters apart. The project cost around two billion euros.

Developer ( English developer ) and operators ( English operator ) of the wind farm Gwynt y Môr is a joint venture involving the following companies: RWE Innogy with 50% (up to the sale of part of it to the 'UK Green Investment Bank' there were 60 %), Stadtwerke München with 30% and Siemens with 10%.

Construction progress

After preparatory work, the monopiles were founded from August 2012 to May 2013 . The monopiles are 45 to 64 meters long and about 6 meters in diameter. From April 2013 to July 2014 the wind turbines were mounted on the monopiles. It came u. a. RWE's own installation ship Friedrich Ernestine is used. At the beginning of 2013, cabling work began between the wind turbines and the two transformer platforms that had already been built ; The last inner park cable was laid in November 2014. The first wind turbine fed electricity into the grid in August 2013.
