The wind farm North Hoyle is an offshore wind farm in the Irish Sea ( Liverpool Bay / Bay of Liverpool ) about 8 km off the coast of Denbighshire , Wales ( United Kingdom ) between Rhyl and Prestatyn .
construction
There are 30 Vestas V80-2.0 wind turbines in the wind farm with a rotor diameter of 80 m and an installed electrical output of 2 megawatts (MW) each, for a total of around 60 MW. The 30 turbines are distributed in an arrangement of 6 × 5 over an area of approximately 10 km². The bay has water depths of 7–12 m at this point. The gondolas with the generators are 58 m above sea level. The steel towers on which the rotors are mounted have a diameter of 4 meters. The electricity produced is conducted on land via two submarine cables to a transformer station in Rhyl. In the wind farm itself, the cable runs in zigzag form from wind turbine to turbine, these are strung like pearls on a string.
North Hoyle is the first of four offshore wind farms in Liverpool Bay : The neighboring Rhyl Flats to the west with an output of 90 MW went into operation in 2009. Burbo Bank with 90 MW is further east . The much larger Gwynt y Môr park with 160 systems for 576 MW was officially put into operation in June 2015. Burbo Bank belongs to the Danish company Dong Energy , the other three belong to RWE Innogy (formerly RWE npower ).
history
North Hoyle Park is part of "Round 1" of the Crown Estate's offshore wind farm development program , which began in late 2000.
The park was built in 2003/2004 and inaugurated in 2004 by the British Energy Secretary Mike O'Brien . At the time of completion it was the largest offshore wind farm in the UK.
The construction of the wind farm was officially supported by Greenpeace , the electricity produced was marketed as green electricity by npower under the brand name Juice (German: Saft ) .
