Julia Lee Niebergall
Julia Lee Niebergall (born February 15, 1886 in Indianapolis , † October 19, 1968 there ) was a pianist and composer of ragtime .
Live and act
Niebergall, who came from a musical family (her father occasionally played the double bass with the Indianapolis Philharmonic Orchestra), learned the piano as a child . In 1905 she published her first composition Clothilda ; some rags followed between 1907 and 1912. Around 1908 she met May Aufderheide , whom she helped to write down her compositions. Around 1910 Niebergall appeared as a piano comedian, including in the local vaudeville . She was also active as a music teacher at Manual High School and as a silent film pianist. She married in 1921, but was soon divorced. In later years she worked as a music teacher.
According to Christel Nies, Niebergall's rags are no less original than those of male composers and are characterized by their oscillation between exuberance and melancholy. In recent years her titles have been performed again and again, in Germany for example in conversation concerts by Marcus Schwarz with Sabine Wackernagel under the motto "Red Peppers - Die Ragtime women",
