May Aufderheide
May Frances Aufderheide Kaufman (born May 21, 1888 in Indianapolis , † September 1, 1972 in Pasadena (California) ) was an American ragtime composer . Today she is considered the best female composer in this genre.
Life
Aufderheide grew up in a musical family; her violin-playing father worked as a banker ; his sister Mary Kolmer, who performed as a pianist with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra , gave her classical piano lessons as a girl . She composed the first rags by 1908 at the latest. With family money and support from friends who organized the print, she published her Dusty Rag that same year , which, like the Flyer Rag , was initially only sold locally. Shortly thereafter, her father worked as a music journalist and published other works by his daughter (but also by other composers from their circle, such as Gladys Yelvington and Julia Lee Niebergall ), which was referred to nationwide in 1909 in the American Musician and Art Journal . Aufderheide married Thomas M. Kaufman, the son of the architect William S. Kaufman, with whom she moved to Richmond (Indiana) , where he initially supported his father. From 1911 he worked as a brooker in her father's company; shortly afterwards May Aufderheide completed her last compositions. In later years she used a wheelchair because of arthritis . In 1942, Bunk Johnson started the Dixieland revival with her Dusty Rag . In recent years her titles have been performed again and again, in Germany for example in conversation concerts by Marcus Schwarz with Sabine Wackernagel under the motto "Red Peppers - Die Ragtime women", but also orchestrated by Tobias Faßhauer.
