The Grant Island ( English Grant Island ) is an ice-covered island that is about 32 kilometers long and 16 kilometers wide. Its area is 767.8 km². It is located 8 kilometers east of the smaller Shepard Island off the Hobbs coast of Marie-Byrd-Land and is surrounded by the Getz Ice Shelf everywhere except in the north . Grant Island was discovered and mapped on February 4, 1962 by the personnel of the icebreaker USS Glacier . It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names after Commander EG Grant , who was the commander of the USS Glacier at the time of the discovery .
