North Carolina Superintendent of Public Instruction
The North Carolina Superintendent of Public Instruction is one of the constitutional offices of the state of North Carolina . He oversees the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) and oversees the state's public school system.
The Superintendent of Public Instruction is a member of the North Carolina Council of State , elected every four years by the eligible North Carolina population. The office was originally created in 1852 as "General Superintendent of Common Schools". At the time you were still appointed to office and not elected. At the end of the Civil War , the office was abolished and restored as an electoral office under the North Carolina Constitution of 1868.
The Superintendent of Public Instruction is also a member of the North Carolina State Board of Education - a committee that has the most authority over elementary and secondary education in the state.
The acting Superintendent of Public Instruction is Mark Johnson .
