James C. Green

James Collins Green (born February 24, 1921 in Halifax County , Virginia , †  February 4, 2000 in Elizabethtown , North Carolina ) was an American politician . Between 1977 and 1985 he was lieutenant governor of the state of North Carolina.

Career

Nothing is known about James Green's youth and schooling. There is also no information in the sources about his career outside of politics. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . Between 1961 and 1977 he sat as a member of the House of Representatives of North Carolina and was the speaker of this House of Representatives from 1975 . In 1976 he was elected Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina at the side of Jim Hunt . He held this office after a re-election between 1977 and 1985. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. He was the first lieutenant governor of North Carolina to serve a second term. This was only made possible by a constitutional reform passed in 1971. Direct re-election was previously not permitted.

In 1983, Green was charged with bribery but acquitted. A year later he ran unsuccessfully in the gubernatorial election of his party. In the actual elections he then supported the victorious Republican James G. Martin . In 1997 James Green was sentenced to 33 months of house arrest for tax fraud. He died on February 4, 2000 in an Elizabethtown hospital.
