William C. Newland

William Calhoun Newland (* 1860 , † 1938 ) was an American politician . Between 1909 and 1913 he was lieutenant governor of the state of North Carolina .

Career

The exact dates of life as well as the place of birth and death of William Newland are not known. After studying law and becoming a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He was Mayor of Lenoir , Caldwell County, and a member of the North Carolina Senate from 1881 to 1882 . In the years 1889 and 1890 and again from 1903 to 1904 he sat as a member of the House of Representatives from North Carolina . In 1904 he ran unsuccessfully for the United States House of Representatives .

In 1908 Newland was elected lieutenant governor of North Carolina alongside William Walton Kitchin . He held this office between 1909 and 1913. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. In 1912, he participated as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Baltimore , where Woodrow Wilson was nominated as a presidential candidate. William Newland died in 1938. The village of Newland in Avery County was named after him.
