Wilkins P. Horton

Wilkins Perryman Horton (born September 1, 1889 in Kansas City , Kansas , †  February 1, 1950 ) was an American politician . Between 1937 and 1941 he was lieutenant governor of the state of North Carolina .

Career

After graduating from law school and admitted to the bar, Wilkins Horton began practicing the profession in North Carolina. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He served in the North Carolina Senate in 1919, 1927, 1931, and 1935 . In 1930 he was a member of his party's state executive as secretary.

In 1936, Horton was elected Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina alongside Clyde R. Hoey . He held this office between 1937 and 1941. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. In 1940 he ran unsuccessfully in his party's gubernatorial election. In July 1948 he took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia , on which President Harry S. Truman was nominated for re-election. Horton was also a Freemason . He died on February 1, 1950.
