Richard Tillman Fountain (born February 15, 1885 in Edgecombe County , North Carolina , †  February 21, 1945 in Rocky Mount , North Carolina) was an American politician . Between 1929 and 1933 he was lieutenant governor of the state of North Carolina.

Career

Richard Fountain attended public schools in his home country. After a subsequent law degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his admission as a lawyer in 1907, he began to work in Rocky Mount in this profession. Between 1911 and 1918 he worked as a judge in this city. In 1918 he was elected a Democrat to the North Carolina House of Representatives. After several re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms there. From 1927 to 1929 he was speaker of this chamber.

In 1928, Fountain was elected Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina at the side of Oliver Max Gardner . He held this office between 1929 and 1933. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . In 1932 he ran unsuccessfully in his party's gubernatorial primaries. Between 1934 and 1942 he published the Rocky Mount Herald newspaper. In 1936 and 1942 he failed in the primary elections for the US Senate . He died on February 21, 1945 in Rocky Mount.
