Rocky Mount is a city in the US state of North Carolina in the United States . The city lies on the border of two counties. Parts of the city therefore belong to Nash County , parts to Edgecombe County .

The community was officially established on February 19, 1867 . However, the municipality was already settled at the beginning of the 19th century; the first post office opened in 1816.

In 1996 the city of Battleboro was incorporated into Rocky Mount.

In 2016 the city had 55,466 inhabitants. The urban area extends over 92.7 km².
