Whitey Thomas

Erwin "Whitey" Thomas (born June 29, 1920 in Rocky Mount , North Carolina ; † November 9, 2012 ) was an American jazz trumpeter and one of the last remaining members of the Glenn Miller Orchestra.

“Whitey” Thomas, who comes from a musical family, began his career with Tommy Reynolds in Boston in 1938, but during this time he played in the Miller-Band as a substitute. In 1943, when he was doing his military service at Fort Bragg, he became a member of the Trumpet Section of Glenn Miller and the Army Air Force Band . He participated in his RCA recordings at that time, so in Long Ago (and Far Away) with the singer Johnny Desmond , and went to England with the orchestra to look after the troops. After Miller's death in late 1944 he worked in the orchestras of Tex Beneke , Billy May and Jerry Gray . Thomas, who died in November 2012 at the age of 92, took part in 264 recording sessions from 1943 to 1954 alone.
