Robert B. Jordan

Robert Byrd Jordan III (born October 11, 1932 in Mount Gilead , Montgomery County , North Carolina ; † February 16, 2020 there ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ). Between 1985 and 1989 he was lieutenant governor of the state of North Carolina.

Career

In 1954, Robert Jordan graduated from North Carolina State University in Raleigh , where he studied forestry. He then worked after a two-year period in the United States Army in the family-owned company in the wood industry. He later took over the management of this company. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party. His first political office was that of a local council in Mount Gilead. In 1961 he became a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of North Carolina . There he was jointly responsible for expanding the university system in his state from three to six universities. Between 1976 and 1984 he was a member of the North Carolina Senate . He also served on several of his state's school and education boards.

In 1984 Jordan was elected Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina alongside James G. Martin . He held this office between 1985 and 1989. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. In 1988 he ran unsuccessfully against the Republican incumbent Martin for the office of governor. On May 20, 2009, Robert Jordan was named chairman of the board of trustees of North Carolina State University .
