Elias Carr
Elias Carr (born February 25, 1839 in Edgecombe County , North Carolina , † July 22, 1900 ibid) was the 48th governor of North Carolina.
Youth and political advancement
Elias Carr attended Oaks School and the University of Virginia . After participating in the American Civil War , he became a farmer and soon became a political advocate for the interests of agriculture. In 1887 he attended a North Carolina Farmers Convention (State Farmers Convention). As early as 1886 he was a delegate at a nationwide congress of American farmers.
North Carolina Governor
As a member of the Democratic Party, he was nominated for governor in 1892. He managed to win the election. His four-year term began on January 18, 1893 and ended on January 12, 1897. During this time, the budget for the state universities was increased. Prison reform was initiated and the country's road network was expanded.
Retirement
After the end of his tenure, Carr withdrew from politics, but remained connected to agriculture and its problems and interests. He died on July 22, 1900. He was married to Elenor Kearney, with whom he had six children.
