The Lübeck Christmas Market was first mentioned in 1648 and is now one of the most famous Christmas markets in Northern Germany . It takes place annually from the day after Eternal Sunday until December 30th in Lübeck's old town .

history

The Christmas market in the Hanseatic city of Lübeck is very likely older than its first documented mention in 1648. Unlike today, however, in the 17th century the market took place exclusively on the last two working days before Christmas , New Year and Epiphany . From 1872 the market was held from December 21st to January 5th and, since 1895, only until New Year's Eve . The location was almost always the centrally located market at the town hall . Since 1847 the adjacent Schrangen and after its development in 1855 the Koberg were included. At times, parts of the market were also held on the parade and at the old station on the Obertrave.

Up until the end of the 19th century, the Christmas market was mainly characterized by craftsmen and their products, as well as by traveling musicians. In 1803 Garlieb Merkel described him as follows:

Wooden stalls were set up in the marketplaces in which toys, confectionery, and warm waffles were for sale, and as soon as they were lit up in the evening, young and old flocked to indulge in the beautiful glow of light. Music could be heard in every street ...

Outside traders had to prove that the goods they offered were manufactured by them and were not commodities. Before 1873, foreign traders were also subject to stricter regulations in that they were only allowed to offer their goods until dark, while local Luebsche craftsmen and traders were allowed to keep their stalls open until 11 p.m. The traders from neighboring Holstein or Mecklenburg , for example , also had to pay a higher stall fee and - for fear of possible epidemics - sometimes had to show health certificates. The local vendors had fixed seats allotted for life. Even then, they were sold in small wooden stalls. In 1829 125 salespeople came together, most of them from the trade. Among them there were, for example, cake bakers , cobblers and basket makers .

The Christmas market with its booth magic on the Lübeck market square had been preserved since ancient times . Gradually the space around the market fountain had become too narrow. In 1924, for example, the space between the Holsten Gate and the old train station was added, where life was extremely lively. This was also the case because this branch of the Christmas market was characterized by carousels , air swings and other amusement institutions that did not exist on the market square.
