Burton Cecil Downing (born February 5, 1885 in San José , California , † January 1, 1929 in Red Bank ) was an American cyclist who participated very successfully in the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis.
Downing took part in all seven Olympic cycling competitions, which were held on a cinder track. He won medals in six disciplines: over ¼ mile (402.33 m) , ⅓ mile (536.45 m) and 1 mile (1609.34 m) silver, over ½ mile (804.67 m) he reached third place . He won the races over 2 miles (3218.68 m) and 25 miles (40.225 km) .
Downing cycled until 1907, in 1902 he finished second in the six-day race in New York City. After his sports career, he moved to New York and became a successful building contractor. In 1998 he was inducted into the United States Bicycling Hall of Fame for American cycling.
