The 25-mile track cycling men at the Olympic Games in 1904 in St. Louis was held on 5 August.
Only athletes from the United States took part in the race, which has never been part of the Olympic program since. Of the ten athletes who started, six did not finish the race.
Charles Schlee had to end the race early after two miles due to a flat tire. The same was true of Edward Billington after three miles . Oscar Goerke broke the tire after ten miles, but got on another bike and rode it another seven miles before giving up due to another flat tire. For the last two laps the field consisted of Burton Downing , Arthur Andrews , George Wiley and Samuel LaVoice , all of whom were close together. Andrews leads the penultimate lap, while Downing overtook him on the last lap, who had won the two- mile race two days earlier . With one and a half wheel lengths ahead of Andrews and four over Wiley Downing secured the Olympic victory.
