Per Husby (born April 2, 1949 in Oslo ) is a Norwegian jazz pianist and composer.

Live and act

Husby studied piano at the Oslo Conservatory from 1962 to 1967 and acoustics at the Technical College in Trondheim until 1973 . He also studied music at Trondheim University and the Berklee College of Music .

In the 1970s Husby was active in Trondheim as a leader of his own bands, played with Bjørn Alterhaug and Asmund Bjørken and worked on Laila Dalseth's album Just Friends . He also directed a septet between 1975 and 1978 (with Knut Riisnæs , Bernt Anker Steen , Carl Morten Iversen and Sven Erik Gaardvik, among others ), with which he performed his own compositions and arrangements and recorded the LP Peacemaker in 1976 .

From 1977 to 1980 he was musical director of the Trøndelag Theater , played with the John Pål Inderberg / Tore Engstrøm Quintet and Ove Stokstads Band as well as with musicians such as Pepper Adams and James Moody .

In the early 1980s, Husby led his own quintet. With the Per Husby Orchestra , the u. a. Karin Krog , Georgie Fame , John Surman , Frode Thingnæs , Jan Allen , Dusko Goykovich and Knut Riisnæs, he performed at the Molde and Kongsberg jazz festivals and recorded two albums ( Dedications , 1985 and Your Eyes , 1987). For Dedications he received the Spellemann Prize . In 1989 he received the Buddy Prize .

Furthermore, a number of compositions were composed in the 1980s, including the music for the documentary series 2048 of the Norwegian radio, Notes for Nature , a jazz suite for sextet, string quartet and voice, Poesi for three sopranos, wind quintet and jazz soloists (1986), Two pieces for brass quintet as well as pieces for big band and smaller jazz formations.

In the 1990s, Husby worked as the musical director and arranger of the television music show Da Capo . In 1995 he recorded the album If You Could See Me Now with twelve American musicians in New York , and in 1997 he recorded the album Night Birds ( Gemini ) with Harry Allen , Totti Bergh and George Masso . After 2000 he turned back to composition.
