Totti Bergh

Theodor Christian Frølich "Totti" Bergh (* 5. December 1935 in Oslo , † 4. January 2012 ) was a Norwegian jazz - saxophonist and bandleader .

Life

Bergh, born in Oslo in 1935, first played the clarinet before switching to the saxophone in 1952, while he was engaged as a musician on the ship Amerikabåt . In the following years he worked with Einar Schanke (1955/56), Kjell Karlsen (1956–64), Rowland Greenberg (1960–64, 1974–81) and from 1966 with Per Borthen , later in Laila Dalseth's quintet . As a soprano saxophonist he played in the Christiania Jazzband and in Christiania 12 in the 1990s .

Under his own name, he presented several albums on Gemini Records , stylistically based on Lester Young and Dexter Gordon . His older brother was the journalist and music producer Johs. Bergh (1932-2001).

Prizes and awards

Bergh was honored with a Gammleng Prize in 1994 . In 1995 he received the Oslo Bys cultural grant from the city of Oslo. At the 1997 Oslo Jazz Festival he was awarded the Ella Prize . In 1999 he received the Buddy Prize , the highest Norwegian jazz prize , from the Norwegian Jazz Forum .
