Egil Kapstad

Egil Kapstad (born August 6, 1940 in Oslo ; † July 13, 2017 there ) was a Norwegian jazz pianist , arranger and composer .

Live and act

Kapstad became known as a member of Frode Thingnæs ' Quintet in the early 1960s . From 1962 to 1964 he led his own trio and also worked with Karin Krog . 1964–1965 he was a member of Bjørn Johansen's quartet and performed with Thorleif Østereng's orchestra.

In 1965 he studied counterpoint , harmony and twelve-tone technique with Bjørn Fongård and instrumentation with Sigurd Berge . In 1967, Syner was born , his first album as a band leader. In the 1970s, along with Krog and Johansen, Paul Weeden , Harald Gundhus and Bjarne Nerem were among his musical partners. In 1977 he received the Buddy Prize .

Since 1977 he has worked with the ensembles of Magni Wentzel . The LP Til Jorden was created with the poet Rolf Jacobsen . In the 1980s he appeared with bands such as the Appaloosa Mainstream Ensemble (1980–1984), the Nordic Be-Bop Society and the Friends Connection and made recordings with Thorgeir Stubø and Per Husby .

In collaboration with the poet Jan Erik Vold , a series of recordings was made from 1986 onwards ( Den dagen Lady døde , 1986; Blåmann! Blåmann! With Chet Baker , 1988; Sannheten om trikken er at den brenner , 1990; Pytt Pytt Blues , 1992; Obstfelder Live på Rebekka West , 1993; Her er huset som Per bygde , 1996). As the house pianist of the Gemini label, he made recordings with Totti Bergh , Laila Dalseth , Al Cohn , Kenny Davern , Flip Phillips and Bjarne Nerem. For his albums Cherokee and Remembrance he received the Spellemannprisen in the jazz category. In the 1990s recordings were made a. a. with George De Leon , Karin Krog, Staffan William-Olsson and Hilde Hefte . He also worked with Red Mitchell , Barney Kessel , Bob Brookmeyer , Jan Garbarek , Sheila Jordan , Philip Catherine and Toots Thielemans .

In addition, Kapstad composed more than fifty drama music as well as music for cinema and television films. His composition Duomo was premiered in Nidaros Cathedral by the boys' choir of the cathedral and the Trondheim symphonic orchestra. Kapstad also wrote string quartets and other works for chamber music ensembles and for jazz ensembles.
