Paul Weeden

Paul W. Weeden Sr. (* 7. January 1923 in Indianapolis , Indiana ; † 2. July 2011 in Oslo ) was an American jazz - guitarist , who recently lived in Norway.

Life

Weeden, born in Indianapolis in 1923, played with Rusty Bryant in 1954 , with whom the first recordings were made in New York. In the early 1960s he directed the Paul Weeden Trio with organist Don Patterson and drummer Billy James ; In 1962 he played in the Sonny Stitt / Don Patterson Quartet and in the Gene Ammons Quintet and towards the end of the year in Eddie Lockjaw Davis's band , on whose album Streetlights ( Prestige ) he participated. In 1963 he worked with Don Patterson, in 1967 with the formation The Harlem Kiddies with King George . In 1968 he appeared in the band of Coleman Hawkins in Copenhagen; 1969 with his own quartet in the Netherlands, a. a. with Maarten van Regteren Altena and in the Carl Schulze Trio .

In 1971 he moved to Norway, played with Einar Iversen , Egil Kapstad , Jon Christensen , Odd Riisnæs , Eivin Sannes , Vidar Johansen , Roy Nikolaisen, Rune Nicolaysen, Kristen Svendsen, Ole Jacob Hansen , Jacob Young and other Norwegian musicians. In the mid-1980s he founded the Paul Weeden / Herbert Noord Quintet ; In 1987 he appeared in the Count Basie Orchestra . During a visit to Indianapolis in 2000 he played in a joint formation with Jimmy Coe , who also included Reginald DuValle and Melvin Rhyne .

The 2003 documentary Too Young to Be Old by Tove Midling-Jenssen shows his collaboration with the formation Grønnes Bad & Jazzforsyning .
