Frode Thingnæs

Frode Thingnæs (born May 20, 1940 in Nore og Uvdal ; † November 15, 2012 ) was a Norwegian jazz trombonist, band leader and composer.

Live and act

Thingnæs studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Denmark. Since the end of the 1950s he joined a. a. with the bands of Bjørn Jacobsen , Gunnar Brostigen , Mikkel Flagstad and Kjell Karlsen . Since 1961 he has led his own quartet, which over time has included musicians such as Egil Kapstad , Terje Rypdal , Laila Dalseth , Espen Rud , Bjørn Alterhaug and Per Husby .

In 1970 he was awarded the Buddy Prize, ten years later (for Direct to Dish ) the Spellemann Prize in the jazz category and in 1983 the Gammleng Prize for jazz.

Thingnæs also worked as a conductor at two theaters in Oslo, conducted the Forsvarets staff music corps and the Kampen Janitsjarorkester for more than thirty years . For the Melodi Grand Prix in 1974 he composed Hvor er du? and 1976 Mata Hari (both times for Anne-Karine Strøm ). His Flåklypaballetten for symphony orchestra was performed at the Norwegian Opera in 1985 . In the same year he wrote his Sonnets to Sundry Notes of Music for symphony orchestra, big band and choir based on texts by Shakespeare.

Henryk Lysiak , Jan Erik Kongshaug , Pete Knutsen , Steffen Stokland , Svein Christiansen and Terje Gewelt contributed to his album Watch What Happens (1993) . Thingnæs later led a quintet with Harald Gundhus .
