Egil Johansen (jazz musician)

Egil Johansen (* 11. January 1934 in Oslo , † 4. December 1998 in Kykoping ) was a Norwegian jazz - drummer , composer , arranger and music teacher .

Live and act

Johansen, who was also known by his nickname Egil "Bop", began his career as a musician at the age of 16 when he played in Einar Stenberg's orchestra in 1950. He then worked in Egil Monn-Iversen's orchestra and in the experimental band of Kjell Johansen, of which he was a member from 1951 to 1953. In 1952 he played in Rowland Greenberg's orchestra. In 1954 he moved to Sweden at the invitation of Simon Brehm , where he worked with leading musicians from the local jazz scene such as Arne Domnérus , Bengt Hallberg , Rune Gustafsson , Georg Riedel and Jan Johansson . In 1957 he was a member of the Rune Öfwerman Trio, which recorded the album Swinging in Sweden with clarinetist Tony Scott .

Under the direction of Harry Arnold , Johansen played with guest American musicians in the late 1950s, for example with Quincy Jones ( Quincy's Home Again ) in 1958 . In the 1960s Egil Johansen toured with the Arne Domnérus orchestra and took part in recordings by Alice Babs . As part of the troop entertainment, he played in Gaza and later in Cyprus in front of Swedish UN troops. From 1973 to 1983 he was the initiator and head of the artists' cooperative Jazz Incorporated , but also belonged to the Swedish Radio Jazz Group ( Terje Rypdal Odyssey: In Studio & In Concert ). In 1983 he took part in a session by Lee Konitz with Scandinavian musicians around Lars Sjösten ( Dedicated to Lee ); In 1984 he played as a member of the Swedish All-Stars with Jack Sheldon and in 1985 in Per Husby's orchestra ( Dedications ). Around 1990 he played in the trio of pianist Egil Kapstad . From 1985 to 1998 he played in the Norwegian group Brazz Brothers , which also played with Misha Alperin .

In 1993 he received the Buddy Prize , the highest award in Norwegian jazz, in 1995 the Gammleng Prize and in 1997 the Jan Johansson Scholarship . He also appeared as a singer in the Hasseåtage revue Spader madame . Johansen is the father of the singer Jan Johansen.

Johansen has also worked with Totti Bergh , Klaus Doldinger , Rolf Ericson , Lars Gullin , Bengt Hallberg , Atle Hammer , Einar Iversen , Thad Jones , Ove Lind , Nils Lindberg , Åke Persson , Knut Riisnæs , Bengt-Arne Wallin , Staffan William-Olsson and Monica Zetterlund .
