Mikhail Yefimovich Alperin ( Russian Михаил Ефимович Альперин even Миша Альперин Misha Alperin ; * 7. November 1956 in Kamenetz-Podolski , Ukrainian SSR , Soviet Union (now Kamianets-Podilskyi, Ukraine ); † 11. May 2018 in Oslo , Norway ) was a jazz pianist (occasionally melodica player ), who was known under the name Mikhail Alperin or Misha Alperin .

Live and act

Alperin grew up in Bessarabia and completed classical piano studies by 1976. Since 1977 he has worked as a freelance arranger, composer and musician. In 1980 he founded one of the first Moldovan jazz bands with Simon Shirman , a quartet dedicated to combining jazz and folk elements.

In Moscow he met the horn player of the Moscow Symphony Orchestra and the Bolshoi Theater Arkadi Schilkloper , with whom he recorded the internationally acclaimed album Waves of Sorrow in 1989 . The singer and clarinetist Sergei Starostin later joined the duo . The formation recorded several albums under the name Moscow Art Trio and performed at international festivals.

Alperin has lived in Norway since 1993, where he taught piano as professor at the Oslo Music Academy . In 1995 he arranged the pieces for a concert in Sofia with the Bulgarian choir Angelite , the South Siberian ensemble Huun-Huur-Tu and Sergei Starostin.

Alperin composed works for children's choir and for chamber orchestra , a jazz ballet and a concerto for flugelhorn , piano and orchestra.

The musician succumbed to long-term cancer in Oslo .
