Odyssey: In Studio & In Concert is a jazz album by Terje Rypdal and his group Odyssey , which was released on June 22, 2012. The three-CD box includes studio recordings from 1975 previously released under the title Odyssey and a previously unreleased live recording with the large-format Swedish Radio Jazz Group from 1976.

history

Odyssey was the name of an unusually (with trombone and organ) cast quintet by Norwegian guitarist Terje Rypdal, with whom he toured Europe from 1975 to 1977 and presented his fifth album (for the first time a double LP). The album was recorded in August 1975 by Jan Erik Kongshaug .

Rypdal had been influenced by Ligeti's music since 1971 , which was reflected in his compositions for the quintet despite their rock orientation . The group performed together with the Swedish Radio Jazz Group in southern Sweden in June 1976 and performed the suite Unfinished Highballs in Rypdal's orchestration: in addition to guitar, organ and mellophone, eleven wind instruments, three bassists and two percussionists play.

Release history

The double album Odyssey has already been released twice on CD, but both times, unfortunately, only in a version shortened by the long track Rolling Stone . For the first time the work has now been published in full on CD, including the epic-rock number Rolling Stone .

reception

"Even in the most extreme moments, Rypdal's sophistication is evident," said the Penguin Guide to Jazz in recognition of the studio album. “There are long passages in 'Midnite', 'Adagio' and 'Farewell' that could also be remnants of a forgotten Miles Davis session. The harmonies, however, are entirely his own and very difficult to define. They are also the reason why this album and other recordings from that period still sound so fresh today. "

“For those who haven't really gotten to grips with Rypdal's style, the album Odyssey could be a good door opener: The eight pieces are captivating with their versatility and, in parts, a vitality that is still hard to escape. Despite their almost forty years of age, 'Midnite' and 'Over Birkerot' hit the bull's eye in jazz and rock alike. Such intoxicating energy can only be found at ECM nowadays at Erkki-Sven Tüür. ”For the reviewer, however,“ the complexity of the quieter (solo) pieces ... is not immediately apparent. ”The problem is“ the seventies soundscape “, Which“ in parts as a bit aged ”is noticed. Still, the "amazing" album is consistently worthwhile.

According to Peter Marsh for the BBC , the third CD in particular was worth the long wait. The arrangements were, without this would surprise, "more jazz-oriented, with nuances of George Russell , of Gil Evans and even Zappa The Grand Wazoo ." Even John Fordham, the music critic of the Guardian , picks up the wide stylistic range from , which presents a very different Rypdal: on the one hand Better Off Without You with its pop song structure, on the other hand the suite Unfinished Highballs with its “kaleidoscope of ghostly woodwind scores and church organ sounds . It's an amazing extra chapter in the Rypdal story. "
