Torbjørn Sunde (born February 16, 1954 in Oslo ) is a Norwegian trombonist and composer of modern jazz .

Live and act

Sunde, who like his brother Arnulf Sunde initially excelled in speed skating and took part in the Norwegian championships in 1971, 1972 and 1973, completed a bachelor's degree in sport at the Norwegian Sports University . He then studied musicology at the University of Oslo . In 1974 and 1975 he went on tour with Terje Rypdal and can also be heard on his album Odyssey (1975). Then he belonged to the group of Edward Vesala ( Satu , 1977). Since 1981 he has been a member of Jon Balke's bands , particularly Oslo 13 (which received the Spellemann Prize in 1988 for the album Off Balance ). At the same time he belonged to the Oslo Rhythm & Blues Ensemble (1981–1985), to the Four Roosters (1982–1984, Rooster blues 1982) and Jon Ebersons Jazzpunkensemblet , later to Etno Funk , Chipahua (1984–1988), Horns for Hire , as well Mezzoforte , with whom he went on an international tour in 1994. He also recorded with Jon Eberson ( Stash , 1988) and Knut Værnes (1993).

He directed his large-format ensemble Meridians of Music (to which Terje Rypdal, Bugge Wesseltoft , Eivind Aarset and Jon Balke contributed), with which he released his debut album under his own name in 1998. In 2001 he presented an album with his octet. He also worked in a quartet with Tom Olstad, Roy Powell and Per Mathisen ( The Blue Note sessions ). Most recently he led the group Fire Fyrer with Espen Rud , in which he also sang ( Prøysen goes jazz , 2012). As an accompanist, he also worked with Rickie Lee Jones , Randy Crawford , Dr. John , Joe Cocker , the Norwegian singer Jan Eggum ( Deilig , 1999), Miki N'Doye , Arild Andersen and Jan Garbarek .
