Morten Halle (born October 7, 1957 in Oslo ) is a Norwegian jazz musician ( alto and tenor saxophone , composition and arrangement ). He is considered a prominent figure in current Norwegian jazz and is also a professor at Norges Musikkhøgskole .

Live and act

Under the influence of Jan Garbarek, Halle founded a quartet together with the pianist Georg Reiss in 1974, which existed until 1977; then he led combos together with the trumpeter Bror Hagemann and with the pianist Rune Klakegg. Between 1981 and 1986 he studied music at the University of Oslo . During this time he became a member of Oslo 13 and of the band Cutting Edge , with whom he played at various festivals, released three albums and toured England. From 1987 he led a quartet with John Eberson , which included Bjørn Kjellemyr and first Finn Sletten, then Pål Thowsen on drums. He also played with Knut Værnes and with Jon Balke's jazz punk ensemble . With Torbjørn Sunde and Jens Petter Antonsen he formed the studio wind group Horns for Hire , which was involved in numerous albums. He directs the large-format ensemble 1300 Oslo , with which he recorded the album Live in the North (2001). He has also performed with the Magnetic North Orchestra , the Geir Lysne Listening Ensemble and Søyr .

Halle worked as a composer for film, theater and ballet and set Jesper Halle's poems to music, which were performed by Jonas Fjeld and Sidsel Endresen (1988). Between 2002 and 2004 he was the president of the Norwegian copyright organization TONO.

Halle presented several albums with his own groups, such as a trio with Anders Jormin and Svante Henryson. Since 2006 he has been working with his own quartet Halles Komet with Edvard Askeland, Torstein Lofthus and Andre Petersen and Vigleik Storaas , who presented two albums, most recently expanded to include Feya Faku . In 2005 he was appointed to the Norges Musikkhøgskole as a university lecturer, where he has headed the jazz section since 2008.
