Andre Petersen

Andre Petersen (born January 28, 1978 in Cape Town ) is a South African jazz musician ( piano , composition ).

Act

Petersen first studied classical piano at the University of Cape Town and the University of South Africa ; Then he completed the jazz master’s course at the Belgian Lemmens Institute with cum laude . In 2006 he toured with the Norwegian avant-garde band Søyr , where he met Morten Halle , with whom he formed the band Halles Komet , with which he has so far released two albums. He has worked with leading South African musicians such as Winston Mankunku , Makaya Ntshoko , Feya Faku , Robbie Jansen , Judith Sephuma and Jimmy Dludlu . He also played with Stefon Harris , Reggie Washington , Dave Liebman , Marcus Strickland , Zap Mama , but also with Soweto Kinch and Jazz Jamaica . In 2017 he released the duo album Where Worlds Collide together with his fellow student, the New York-based classical pianist Kathleen Tag , which the two also presented on a tour in North America.

Petersen teaches as a lecturer at the Wits School of the Arts at Witwatersrand University , previously at the University of Cape Town and Stellenbosch University .

Prizes and awards

Petersen has received numerous awards for classical and jazz music, including first prize in the Old Mutual Jazz Encounters Competition , first prize in the SAMRO Overseas Piano Scholarship Competition , the Oppenheimer Overseas Scholarship and the Vuya Foundation Scholarship Award . In 2011 he took part in the Paris Concours de Pianojazz Martial Solal and received a Special Mention Award.
