Jimmy Dludlu is a South African guitarist. His music is assigned to Afrojazz .

Life

Born in Mozambique, he first played his cousin's self-made guitar when he was 13. He taught himself to play the guitar by imitating jazz and African music that he had heard on the radio. His first appearances were at weddings in South African townships .

Dludlu's career started in the mid-1980s in various bands from Swaziland and Botswana ; he then played with McCoy Mrubata and also accompanied Hugh Masekela , Miriam Makeba , Sipho Mabuse and Papa Wemba , but also worked with Winston Mankunku , Robbie Jansen and Victor Ntoni . In 1993 he played at the Grahamstown Jazz Festival with Morris Goldberg , and the following year with Herb Ellis . In 1996 he performed with Courtney Pine at the Arts Alive Festival in Johannesburg .

He has been leading his own group since the mid-1990s. The music is characterized by memorable melodies; his guitar playing is influenced by Wes Montgomery and Pat Metheny . Jimmy Dludlu had great success in South Africa in 2001 with the title Africa Africa together with BeBe Winans .

Awards

He has received several awards from the FNB SAMA and has been nominated several times for the South African Music Awards .
