South African Music Awards

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The South African Music Awards (SAMA; German about: " South African Music Awards ") are a prize of the Record Industry of South Africa (RiSA; about: "South African record industry") in South Africa . They have been awarded annually to successful musicians since 1995. In 2012 there were 37 awards, in 2019 there were 38 awards. The prize consists of a figure called "Sama".

procedure

The prizes are split similarly to the Grammy Awards . Main prizes are awarded for the Lifetime Achievement ("Life Achievement ") and International Achievement ("International Success"). The "Top 5" include the prizes for the best album of the year, the group or duo of the year, the newcomer of the year and the female or male artist of the year. There are additional prizes in the categories MTN Record of the Year , Best Selling Album and - in three categories - MTN Best- Selling mobile music download (" Most downloaded piece of music on mobile radio") , partly named after the main sponsor MTN.

The prizes are awarded on two consecutive days in April, May or June during a show at the Superbowl in Sun City . Some of the nominated artists will perform live. The winner will be announced out of five nominees. Musicians are honored for their achievements in the previous year of the award ceremony. The prizes are awarded by independent experts who work for radio stations, print media or in the academic field and are redefined every year. Deviating from this, some prizes are determined on the basis of sales figures, while the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Executive Committee of the RiSA and the Record of the Year award, in which more than five albums are nominated, are awarded by public vote via SMS. In 2012 the singer Zahara won eight SAMAs for her album Loliwe.
