Victor Ntoni

Victor Mhleli Ntoni (* 1947 in Langa , Cape Town ; † January 28, 2013 in Johannesburg ) was a South African modern jazz musician (bassist, arranger and composer).

Live and act

Ntoni grew up in the townships of Cape Town and first learned to play the guitar before switching to the double bass . As a teenager he played with McCoy Mrubata in his band The Uptown Sextet . As the musical director of the musical Meropa , he toured Europe in 1975. He met Abdullah Ibrahim through the drummer Nelson Magwaza, and he was involved in his album Peace and other recordings between 1971 and 1979. He recorded with Kippie Moeketsi and directed his own sextet before graduating from Berklee School of Music and playing with Dudu Pukwana ( Diamond Express ) in 1978 and with Hugh Masekela in 1979 , for whom he also wrote compositions such as Nomalizo . He also worked for Ratau Mike Mkhalemele, Iconoblast and Ezra Ngcukana . In the late 1980s he was the musical director of the Carling Circle of Jazz festival . In 1989 he founded the band Afro Cool Concept with Darius Brubeck , with whom he also toured North America, Italy and Thailand. For Mandela's release he wrote the song The People Want Mandela . In the 1990s he also belonged to the experimental band Iconoclast with Hilton Schilder , Vusi Khumalo and Khaya Mahalngu . He also played for Ringo Madlingosa. His album Heritage (2004) received very good reviews and was nominated for the South African Music Award (SAMA) in the category “Best Contemporary Jazz Album” . In 2012 he wrote and arranged the music in The South African Songbook - SA Folklore Music . In 2014 he received the Order of Ikhamanga in silver.
