McCoy Mrubata

McCoy Mrubata (born June 1, 1959 in Cape Town ) is a South African jazz musician ( tenor and alto saxophone , saxello , flute ).

Live and act

Mrubata, who was interested in music at an early age, did not begin to learn the flute until 1976. Since 1979 he has worked as a professional musician. He first played with Duke and Ezra Ngcukana and Spencer Mbadu in the fusion band Fever , then with other Cape Jazz bands . He later toured with Sipho Mabuse and worked with Ray Phiris Stimela . In 1988 he got the opportunity to record his debut album Firebird with his band in the UK . In 1992 he toured with Hugh Masekela before concentrating on his own bands like Cape to Cairo or McCoy's Friends . From 1995 he was able to record his own albums in South Africa. He also formed the Sheer All Stars with Paul Hanmer , Sipho Gumede , Errol Dyers and Frank Paco . He also worked with Pops Mohamed , Airto Moreira and Flora Purim . In 2001 he appeared in two musicals related to Bob Marley at the Nordic Black Theater in Oslo . In a third musical, Beyond the Blues: the John Coltrane Story , he played the leading role. In 2009 he toured Switzerland in a duo with pianist Paul Hanmer.

Prizes and awards

In 1990 Mrubata and his band received the Gilbey's Music for Africa award for their debut album . In 2003 he received a South African Music Award (SAMA) for his album Face the Music . In 2005 he received another SAMA for his album Icamagu Livumile.
