Spencer Mbadu

Spencer Mbadu (* 1955 in Kensington , Cape Town ) is a South African jazz bassist and arranger.

Mbadu grew up in Nyanga West since 1958 and received his first musical instruction as a child in the choir and on the harp, which his grandmother played in church. As a teenager he played in a rock band in the township before switching to bass guitar. In 1977 he played in the band Skyf with Winston Mankunku , Roger Khoza , Windsor Ngabi and Robert Sithole. He later played with Mankuku, but also in bands with Khader Kahn, Russell Herman , Kevin Humbles, Tony Cedras , Bheki Mseleku , Archie Fisher and the singer Steven Erasmus.

In 1981, Mbadu for Sipho Gumede in the African Jazz Band Spirits Rejoice , where he with Mervyn Africa , Paul Petersen, Gilbert Matthews , and the winds Robbie Jansen , Duke Makasi occurred Thabo Mashishi and George Tyefumani, was also in the pop band Joy active . In the mid-1980s he was initially a member of the fusion band McCoy (with Victor Khula and Percy Kunene), then switched to Workforce , where he worked with Robbie Jansen, Denver Furness, Chris Schilder and Stompie Manana. As a studio musician he worked for the label Nkomo and with the big band Chorimba by Duke and Ezra Ngcukana . In 1991 he went on a European tour with Abdullah Ibrahim , and then performed with the groups of Mankunku Ngozi and Ezra Ngcukana. In project 46664 he was on tour and in the studio with Queen and Bono . He also belongs to the Cape Jazz Band around drummer Jack Momple.

Mbadu was also active as a music educator, particularly in Musical Action for People's Power and in the Jazz Workshop .
