Tony Cedras

Tony Cedras (* 1952 in Elsies River , Cape Town ) is a South African jazz musician ( trumpet , piano , accordion , guitar ) who became known to a large audience as a studio musician .

Live and act

Cedras made his first musical experiences in the church choir; he also began to play the accordion before switching to the trumpet and turning to jazz. He worked with musicians such as Jonathan Butler , Winston Mankunku , Robbie Jansen , Russell Herman and Basil Moses , among others in the Estudio project . In the early 1980s, after touring South Africa, he settled in Botswana, where he worked with Jonas Gwangwa in the ANC's Amandla Ensemble and also performed in Europe, Canada and Brazil. In 1985 he moved to London, where he formed the band Kintone , with whom he recorded two albums and performed regularly live in the UK. At the end of 1986 he went back to Africa, where he appeared with the musical Buwa and Caiphus Semenya and Letta Mbulu . On the recommendation of Hugh Masekela , Paul Simon brought him into his Graceland ensemble, with whom he toured until 1989. Then he accompanied Simon from 1990 to 1992 on the Right Time tour. He also worked with Masekela, with Miriam Makeba , with Harry Belafonte (1993) and Henry Threadgill (1994). During this time his album Vision Over People was created . Since the mid-1990s he appeared again in South Africa; however, he did not return from Brooklyn until 2013. He can also be heard on albums by Pharoah Sanders , Gigi , Anton Fig , Francis Mbappe , Paul Simon and Joe Bonamassa .
