Duke Ngcukana

Duke Mkondo Ngcukana (* 1948 in Langa (South Africa) ; † April 16, 2011 in Cape Town ) was a South African jazz musician ( flugelhorn , trumpet ), choirmaster, composer and teacher.

Live and act

Ngukana, who came from a family of musicians (his father was the swing saxophonist Christopher Ngcukana , his brothers were also active as jazz musicians), learned trumpet from the age of six, initially with the Salvation Army . From 1966 he worked professionally as a musician in the Cape region; he played with Chris McGregor and with the Eastern-Cape All Star Band. He then studied Education and Science at Fort Hare University to begin a teaching career. In 1971 he was part of the big band of Abdullah Ibrahim , who called himself Dollar Brand at the time . During the 1970s he was a member of the fusion bands Oswetie and Pacific Express, as well as the soul jazzmen . In 1981 he founded the Langa Adult Choir , which he directed for many years.

From 1989 he was director of the school Musical Action for People's Power ; there he developed chorimba , a crossover of choral and traditional African marimba music with jazz. He also founded the Cups Nkanuka Big Band , with which he performed at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival , and a 20-member ensemble, the Living Heritage Ensemble , where he played with his brothers Ezra, Fitzroy, Cyril and Claude. He also performed with his brother Ezra's band , on whose records he can also be heard.
