Sipho Mabuse

Sipho " Hotstix " Mabuse (born November 2, 1951 in what would later become Soweto , South Africa ) is a South African musician (drums, vocals). He was best known for his hit Jive Soweto in the late 1980s .

Live and act

Mabuse learned to play drums from the age of eight. In 1967 he left school without a degree and began his career as a jazz drummer with Pat Matshikiza and Kippie Moeketsi in the mid-1970s , before playing in the African soul group The Beaters . After a successful tour in Zimbabwe , the band name was changed to Harari in 1976 and they returned to their homeland of South Africa. There the band played a mixture of funk , soul and pop music. The lyrics were in isiZulu , Sesotho and English. In 1985 he started a solo career, in 1988 he played on Nelson Mandela's 70th birthday at Wembley Stadium .

Mabuse has also been involved in productions by Miriam Makeba , Ray Phiri , Sibongile Khumalo and Hugh Masekela . From the 1990s he acted as manager of the jazz club Kippies in the Market Theater in Johannesburg , which he had to close in 2005. He is a board member of the South African National Arts Council and the collecting society South African Musicians Rights Organization . In 2012 he made up his school leaving certificate with matriculation .

The British singer Mpho is Mabuse's daughter.
