Khumalo was taken early on by his father, who was a jazz musician in the 1960s and 1970s, to his concerts in the local jazz club . He became internationally known through his participation in Paul Simon's Graceland album. In the 1990s he belonged to the experimental band Iconoclast with Hilton Schilder , Victor Ntoni and Khaya Mahalngu ; he also played mainstream jazz . With the bass player Fana Zulu he founded the band Dondo ; as part of a rhythm section with Zulu, he also appeared on Moses Molelekwa's album Finding One's Self (1995). He continued to work with Winston Mankunku , Bheki Mseleku , Barney Rachabane , Miriam Makeba , Chucho Valdés , Youssou N'Dour , Mlungisi Gegana, Allen Kwela , Tlale Makhene, Harry Belafonte and the Soweto String Quartet ( Millenia ).
