Chrigel Glanzmann (2007)

Christian "Chrigel" Glanzmann (born May 26, 1975 in Basel ) is a Swiss musician who is best known as the head and multi-instrumentalist of the folk metal group Eluveitie . He is the main singer of the band and has mastered mandola , mandolin , tin and low whistle , gaita , uilleann pipes .

Life

Christian Oliver Ivan Glanzmann was born on May 26, 1975 as the youngest of three siblings in Basel. His older brother, Heinz (* 1966), and his older sister began listening to hard rock such as AC / DC in the 1980s , which also influenced Chrigel. At the age of six, his cousin gave him a record from the band Iron Maiden as a present, which, according to his own statements, ultimately shaped Glanzmann's passion for this music. His childhood was also marked by moving. As a 5- to 14-year-old he received guitar lessons.

As a young adult, Christian Glanzmann first moved to Paris and then to Zurich to be closer to the Zurich metal scene. In the early 1990s, Glanzmann played in several metal bands, his main band being the group Sacer , founded in 1991 . In 1992 this broke up again as many members of the band moved away, including Glanzmann, who moved to France to learn French.

In 1996, Glanzmann lived again in Zurich, where he worked as a bookseller and part-time as a musician. In the same year he also founded the folk rock band Verveine . When this broke up in 1999, Glanzmann founded the Irish folk band Môr Cylch . When this band split up after around 2 years, Glanzmann founded the Irish folk band Branâ Keternâ , with which he still plays mandola , tin whistles and low whistles as well as bagpipes . Branâ Keternâ have not been active for several years, although Glanzmann and Patrick Kistler, who plays guitar with Branâ Keternâ and the bagpipes and Irish whistles with Eluveitie, have repeatedly spoken of a resumption of this project.

In the early 1990s, Glanzmann had the idea of combining Death Metal and Irish Folk , but found no supporters until he founded the band Eluveitie in 2002, initially only as a studio project. Over time, this developed into one of the most famous European folk metal bands. He is the lead singer of the band and has mastered numerous instruments including mandola , tin whistles and low whistles , uilleann pipes , gaita , bagpipes , guitar and bodhrán . He taught himself the folk instruments self-taught .

Glanzmann is married and lives in Illnau-Effretikon .

Private

Glanzmann is an enthusiastic hobby celtologist and was called to give a lecture at the University of Zurich. In 2009 , Glanzmann named the Irish Paddy Keenan as the favorite musician to the German Metal Hammer , as the favorite album Old Hag You Have Killed Me by The Bothy Band and as the favorite book Caesar's Druid by Claude Cueni .
