Anna Murphy (born August 10, 1989 in Switzerland ) is a Swiss musician and sound engineer who became known primarily for her work as a hurdy-gurdy player and singer in the folk metal band Eluveitie .

Life

Anna Murphy (full name: Anna Maria Murphy) was born in Switzerland on August 10, 1989 as the daughter of Dublin- born Irishman Andrew Murphy and the soprano Christiane Boesiger. Since both her father and mother both work as professional opera singers in Switzerland, Anna Murphy came into contact with music from an early age.

At the age of 16 Anna Murphy joined the Swiss folk metal band Eluveitie as a hurdy-gurdy player in 2005 or 2006 . At the time, the band was looking for a hurdy-gurdy player. A friend made him aware of this and Murphy got in touch with the band and was finally accepted. She had started playing the instrument only a few months before, impressed by the music of the German band Faun . After a few hours of lessons at a music academy, she taught herself the instrument, mainly by studying the Eluveitie songs, with a borrowed instrument in self-study. In addition to the hurdy-gurdy, she occasionally plays the flute and sings in numerous songs.

In spring 2010 Anna Murphy founded the ambient project godnr.universe! Together with Meri Tadic ( Eluveitie ) . . At the end of the year, Murphy had also joined the folk group Fräkmündt (named after the old name of Pilatus ), which took part in the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest for the national decision on who would represent Switzerland . Ultimately, their song 'D'Draachejongfer could not prevail against Anna Rossinelli's song In Love for a While . Since spring 2011 Anna Murphy has been working as a sound engineer in the Obernauer Soundfarm Studios near Lucerne . In October of the same year she joined the band Nucleus Torn as a permanent member .

At the beginning of May 2016 it became known that after internal disputes over drummer Merlin Sutter, Anna Murphy also left Eluveitie. In 2016 she founded the folk metal band Cellar Darling with her former Eluveitie band members Merlin Sutter and Ivo Henzi, who released their debut album This Is The Sound in June 2017.

Murphy gave the Swedish musician Joakim Berg as his favorite musician to the German Metal Hammer . As her favorite albums, she cited Hellfire's Dominion by Disaster and Isola of Kent . Her favorite book is In Between the Sheets by Ian McEwan and her favorite drink is Gin Tonic .
