Everything Remains (As It Never Was) ( English for Everything remains as it never was ) is the fourth studio album of the Swiss pagan metal band Eluveitie . It was released on February 19, 2010 under the German record label Nuclear Blast . The band had previously released a music video and a single for the song Thousandfold in December . In an interview with the German music magazine Metal Hammer in March 2009, Chrigel Glanzmann announced that the album would probably be released under the title Visions , which in the end did not materialize.
style
music
After the completely acoustic album Evocation I - The Arcane Dominion , the current album is clearly based on Slania again . In addition to instruments such as electric guitar and drums, passages with a hurdy-gurdy or bagpipe come to the fore. The spectrum of instruments used is very broad and includes the following instruments: drums, bass, acoustic and electric guitars, violins, hurdy-gurdy , bagpipes , flutes, uilleann pipes (Irish bagpipes) , mandola , mandolin and bodhrán .
The combination of classical and folk instruments is advanced on the CD, so that the two elements merge even more strongly than with Slania . However, according to his own statements, Glanzmann does not follow a specific course when composing, but writes intuitively without previously set goals. However, he stated to the Metal Hammer that when composing he was inspired by the mostly previously written lyrics, so that the music on the album has often become "harder, darker and more melancholy" than on the previous albums. Due to the instruments and vocals, the album can be ascribed to Pagan Metal or Melodic Death Metal . Occasionally there are also influences from other metal genres, such as Thrash Metal in “Kingdom Come Undone”.
According to Chrigel Glanzmann, the decisive factor for the sound of the CD was above all the mastering by the Welsh metal producer Colin Richardson . About producer Tommy Vetterli, Glanzmann said, “Tommy was the best thing that could have happened to us. I don't know who else we're going to record our next records with. ”The band's producer was recommended by their manager. The request to Richardson was initially only intended as fun due to a rather tight budget, according to Glanzmann, but he was convinced of the band and finally took over the mixing.
Texts
The lyrics are in English on Everything Remains (As It Never Was) . In addition, the album contains two instrumental songs with Isara and Setlon . In terms of content, the focus of the album, according to Chriegel Glanzmann, is "[...] on the emotional, human side."
“When you deal with history - regardless of the epoch - you usually only get hard facts. The war lasted from then to then, period. We only ever look at the surface of an image. But it's easy to forget that behind it were individuals like you and me - normal people with their ups and downs. I wrote the lyrics from their point of view. Of course, such an approach is tricky because a lot is speculation. Science is already very advanced today. But nobody can say with certainty what people really thought and dreamed back then. Nobody was there. Basically, however, it is important to me that my texts are always based on a certain objectivity and scientific foundation. "

Data and facts about the North America tour 2010 |
---|
|
After the tour was released, the band started Everything Remains , which lasted almost two years until January 2012, and took the band across Europe as well as North and South America . The band initially co-headlined the Paganfest tour in spring 2010 before touring the USA and Canada from April 8th to 25th as the opening act for Amon Amarth .
review
The album entered the German album charts at number 19 and in Switzerland, its country of origin, at number 8. In Austria, France and Finland, the band was able to achieve a chart position for the first time with this album. At number 31 in Finland, the album even ranked better than the album Nifelvind by the Finnish folk metal band Finntroll for a short time .
Marc Halupzock from Metal Hammer concludes his conclusion of the listening session with the words:
“[…] Everything Remains (As It Never Was) is the heaviest and darkest album in the Alps. The typical melodies are retained, however - an apparent contradiction that fits perfectly with the title of the disc. "
In the review, the album received 6 out of 7 points thanks to the Metal Hammer and is commented by Sebastian Kessler with "Hardly any other folk metal band manages to combine rock-hard metal with danceable melodies and authentic tradition in such an impressive way."
