Karlfried founder (born April 23, 1928 in Marklissa , Lower Silesia province ; † March 12, 2011 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German historian of philosophy .

Life

Founder studied philosophy , German and Protestant theology at the University of Freiburg , then at the University of Münster . There he was in 1954 Joachim Ritter with a thesis on Johann Georg Hamann doctorate . The habilitation took place in Münster in 1965 with a work on Paul Yorck von Wartenburg . He held his inaugural lecture at the University of Münster on May 6, 1967. Founder taught as a professor at the Ruhr University in Bochum from 1970 to 1979 , then at the Institute for the History of Philosophy and the History of the Humanities at the Free University of Berlin . After his retirement in 1996, he lived near Freiburg in the Black Forest for health reasons.

Founder's main areas of work were the philosophy of history , the Enlightenment , also in the form of its Jewish form, the Haskala , and its criticism and philosophy of religion . Other philosophers with whom he has dealt in depth were Baruch de Spinoza and Georg Simmel . In addition, he has also dealt with the developments in classical philology in the 19th century , which were triggered by the pioneering publications of the philologists Jacob Bernays and Friedrich Nietzsche on tragedy theory.

Founder has been co-editor since 1969, after the death of Joachim Ritter since 1976 main editor of the historical dictionary of philosophy initiated by Ritter (volumes 4 to 11), the editing of which moved with him from Bochum to Berlin. He was also co-editor of the Archive for Conceptual History (Volumes 11–46). He was also involved in the edition of Wilhelm Dilthey's collected writings (from volume 18). Most recently he co-edited the diaries of Gershom Scholem . He did not hesitate to search for seemingly remote things. One of the plans he had cherished for a long time, but not carried out, was a “library of rightly forgotten thinkers”.

His students include Wilhelm Schmidt-Biggemann , Paul Richard Blum , Hannes Böhringer , Klaus Christian Köhnke and Wolbert Smidt .
