Evocation I - The Arcane Dominion Everything Remains as It Never Was
(2010)

Evocation I - The Arcane Dominion ( English for. Summoning - The mysterious rule ) is the third studio album of the Swiss folk metal band Eluveitie . It is an acoustic album that was released on April 17, 2009 under the German record label Nuclear Blast . The single Omnos was released on March 20, 2009. Immediately after the album was released, the band announced a continuation of the album under the title Evocation II - [...] and has since been confirmed several times in interviews. This was finally published with the addition of Pantheon on August 18, 2017, also on Nuclear Blast

Emergence

The idea of making a purely acoustic album came up very early on. At the end of 2007, Chrigel Glanzmann wrote the concept for the album. Through an extensive Europe - and US - tour which lasted nearly a year, the work was on the album until after the end of the Heidenfest resumed tour in the fall of 2008. Within a month the band managed to compose the fragmentary songs. Immediately after the songwriting process, the band recorded the album in December 2008.

Since the album made special demands on the studio, the recordings were made in the Liechtenstein “Devils Studio” in Vaduz and in the Swiss “Ballhorn Studio” in Winterthur , which specializes in instrumental music. In the studio, the band took on many tasks themselves for the first time, such as engineering and production . The mixing took Arto Tuunela in Finnish Finnvox Studios in January 2009, mastered the album was by Mika Jussila.

After the song Omnos could already be heard on the music platform Myspace in mid-March , the accompanying music video was also released on Myspace on March 24th. Shortly after, a week before the original release date, the entire album was released on the music platform.

Due to an error by the print master in the production of the CDs, the original release date, which was planned for April 11th, could not be kept. Instead, the publication was postponed by a week and thus took place on April 17, 2009. As with Slania , the photographs and the artwork for the album are by Manuel Vargas Lepiz. Chrigel Glanzmann designed the layout.

style

The melodies are strongly based on Celtic and Irish folk songs and are presented with traditional instruments, such as the use of tin whistle , Scottish bagpipe , fiddle , mandola , mandolin , uilleann pipes , bodhrán , long-necked lute , Zugerörgeli , dulcimer and hurdy-gurdy .

In contrast to the two previous albums Spirit and Slania , Anna Murphy does the vocals for the most part. With the exception of the songs Sacrapos , Omnos and Voveso in Mori , the texts are in Gaulish language . With three exceptions, the texts originally come from paintings, bowls and stones that were discovered during excavations in the last two centuries. The songs worked out from it are mostly about mythology and magic . Among other things, they contain verses of incantation and curse or magical formulas . To ensure the most accurate intonation possible, the band worked with various scientists in the run-up to the recordings.

Guest musician

Several guest musicians played on the album. Alan "Naihmass Nemtheanga" Averill from Primordial sang in the songs Sacrapos - At First Glance and Nata , Oliver "SaTyr" Pade from Faun plays long-necked lute on The Arcane Dominion , Fredy Schnyder from Nucleus Torn the dulcimer in Within the Grove and Gobanno . The two former Eluveitie members Sarah Wauquiez and Linda Suter complement Gobanno with the Zugörgeli and Within the Grove and Gobanno with a five-string viola . According to Chrigel Glanzmann, the collaborations with the guest musicians arose, "[...] because Eluveitie wanted to present a very wide range of different traditional sounds on the disc."

content

concept

The album is a concept album . There is a common thread that runs both lyrically and musically through all of the songs. Most of the songs are in the Gallic language and have mythological and magical content, the melodies are exclusively acoustic and to a large extent instrumental .

"The album is supposed to be a journey through Gallic mythology, a journey through the Celtic soul - not only lyrically, but also musically."

- Chrigel Glanzmann : Interview with Metalnews.de

Contents and background of the songs

The word "Sacrapos" translates into German as "Evil eye that appears to be holy". The song Sacrapos - At First Glance tells a story that describes precisely this human quality. Originally the song was supposed to be a pure instrumental, but after Alan Averill had agreed to make a guest contribution for the album, the band decided to add a passage he spoke to the song.

Brictom is based on an original Old Gaulish text that portrays a curse of female magic of the time. It is a so-called bnanom britcom . The music is based on Breton folk music .

A Girls Oath is related to the song Brictom both lyrically and musically .

The short text of the title song The Arcane Dominion comes from an old Gaulish inscription and again has mythological and magical content.

Within the Grove is a pure instrumental based on a traditional Celtic melody.

The Cauldron of Renascence is based on the same inscription as The Arcane Dominion and draws on the mythological fountain of youth , a huge cauldron into which men who were wounded or fallen in battle were thrown in order to be able to emerge afterwards refreshed and alive. The composition corresponds schematically to that of Irish reels . Glanzmann commented on the composition with the words: "I love the speed and the harshness of this type of melody."

Nata is again based on an inscription and represents a kind of love song . It tells the story of a young man who is in love with an engaged girl. The sean-nós singing style found in the song reinforces the desperation and emotions expressed in the original lyrics. The song is performed in a duet by Glanzmann and Alan Averill.

Omnos is about a girl who wanted to sing and pick flowers with a wolf. The wolf, however, wanted to "hunt the flower of their youth", sexually abuse them.

The song Carnutian Forest describes the "forest of the Carnutes ", a place where the druids of all Gallic tribes gathered once a year to hold their meeting. The first part of the song is an interpretation of a traditional Irish melody, the second part was freely composed.

In Dessumiis Luge is again a curse. The curse dates back to the Gallic War and curses numerous Roman leaders.

Gobanno is based on a text that was found in Bern and describes the "blacksmith of Bern", a mythological figure. The melody of the song is based on several Celtic melodies.

Voveso in Mori is about lovesickness.

Sacrapos - The Disparaging Last Gaze represents the recapitulation of the intro and functions as the outro. It is an instrumental piece that "expresses the dark aspect of the human character through the music," said Glanzmann.

The Pit writer Benjamin Verwold particularly praises the musical concept : "[...] the songs harmonize so well with one another that it is hardly possible to highlight individual pieces." He awards the album with 8.5 out of 10 points.

Also powermetal.de praises the successful concept and the strong performance of the songwriter :

"On this album, the exciting ideas and original ideas of a Swiss-Gallic-Celtic folk-creative experiment are combined with the songwriting of Eluveitie, as we know it, which is designed for fun and exuberance."

- Julian Rohrer : CD review

The German Metal Hammer awards 6 out of 7 points and particularly rates the arrangement and the atmosphere of the album:

"All tracks are arranged with great care and sound so authentic that when you listen to them you really think you are in the old Gallic times more than a thousand years ago."

- Simone Bösch : CD review

Metal Hammer author Detlef Dengler closes his report on the listening session of the album with the conclusion

“It's hard to keep an acoustic album exciting over a distance of almost an hour. No problem for the Swiss, who allow modernity, tradition and Celtic mythology to collide and merge equally - vocalized by a multi-layered, intense, sometimes brisk, sometimes fragile Anna Murphy. Conclusion: an individual, ambitious, never overloaded concept disc. "

- Detlef Dengler

Maximilian Nitzke from cdstarts.de awards 8.5 out of 10 points and criticizes above all "two or three songs that don't fit into the structure and a strange structure in terms of instrumental pieces".
