action

The twelve-year-old, autistic loner Jamie Benjamin is a problem child who is not particularly popular and because of a lack of social interaction and communication “lives” more in his dreams than in reality. The strange youngster is also going through puberty , which can make him a. even lets the old neighbor string. Jamie has no friends, with the exception of his “talking” teddy bear , with whom he always talks to himself and who, disturbingly, also gives him advice for everyday life. The boy's parents are at a loss and therefore hire the attractive psychology student Sandy O'Reilly, who is to look after the boy from now on.

The pubescent teenager immediately falls in love with his housekeeper, flirts with her and shares his dark secret with her, even though she is in a relationship with a well-known football player. Deep in the forest the eccentric found a mysterious pit with prehistoric beings, the troglodyts , which he has been supplying with raw meat ever since. These troll-like creatures have yellow eyes and, in addition to an insatiable appetite, are characterized above all by their hunched appearance. The disturbed and ostracized by his fellow men, Jamie befriends the eerie creatures and undertakes to provide his newly won protégés with the daily ration of meat. In the beginning he buys stock from the local butcher's shop, but due to his tight budget and the growing distrust of the butcher, he quickly breaks away from this type of food procurement and becomes more and more ruthless. Living animals such as chickens or a full-grown dairy cow, which he leads to the hole in the ground, will soon serve as food sources.

Meanwhile, the relationship with Sandy deteriorates increasingly, since the young woman, who does not believe in the existence of these monsters, is no longer willing to stand by the sometimes pathological misconduct of her wards. Jamie, on the other hand, is becoming more and more brutal at the same time and, on the advice of his teddy, remembers the people in town who once abused and despised him. The former victim becomes an unscrupulous perpetrator who, following his thirst for revenge, kills his human tormentors, including Sandy's friend Allan, until he gradually runs out of potential “feeders”. Driven by madness and jealousy, he even leads Sandy to his troll-like troglodyts, whom he devotedly cares for every day. He tries to improve the gradually deteriorating relationship with his housekeeper, but due to a carelessness Sandy falls into the hole in the ground, where she is eaten by the hungry monsters.

The disappearance of Sandy and other townspeople without a trace is soon followed by police investigations, which, however, initially largely fail due to incompetence and outdated methods. Meanwhile, Jamie feels unable to feed his creatures and lets them down a rope so that they can organize their own food. The freed monsters therefore kill more innocent people. In the meantime, the police have noticed that these are strange beings who are driving them into a pit in order to eliminate them with an armed vigilante unit, which apparently succeeds.

At the end of the film, Jamie travels with his teddy bear to his grandparents' remote estate, where he is warmly welcomed. Here he makes the acquaintance of Alicia, who is about the same age, who playfully leads him to a troglodyt hole that she has discovered, where her intimidated playmate finds his presumed demise after being pushed.
